Bravo, Drusilla, you've articulated the very point about Vance's use of the picaresque that's eluded my descriptive ability. Thanks for the thought you've applied to an important aspect of what makes Vance unique from Twentieth Century writers (though not utterly dissimilar from past masters like Swift and Cervantes).
