I was weaned on Heinlein too. Podkayne of Mars, Space Cadet, Starship Trooper, etc. I continued to read his juvenile and adult fiction up until he wrote the embarassingly rascist Farnham's Freehold and continued in (to my mind) mean spirited, sexist and thoroughly unenjoyable vein. All the fun drained out of a truly brilliant SF writer as he grew older.
In contrast Vance in his 80's, amazingly enough, manages to characterize the pain and joy of children, adolescents and young adults so beautifully.
