I likewise was depressed at the conclusion of The Face, but isn't that the point? Jerdian is essentially a shallow caricature, bereft of principle or of the monomaniacal drive that makes Gersen what he is. I always thought Vance was pointing out the choices one can make: if you devote your life to an overarching goal, you must sacrifice greatly to succeed. Much as Gersen wants to understand and appreciate the Jerdian's frivolity, he cannot -- for that frivolity is in conflict with his nature. Simply put, he cannot fit in both environments. Certainly a depressing conclusion, at least to me.
