: : : Once thing is certain, Vance's books are no guides to dealing with women or picking up girls.

: I don't think any fiction books, SF books in particular, should be any guide to how to behave in real life (in case your comment was half serious).

D* right too, this was a matter of understatement!

In my opinion, many books (esp adventure books) are to be enjoyed at this "action" level, and if there are other levels, and other readings also, so much the better. Clearly, Vance, has more interesting female characters in his other (later books) such as the ECCE series.

: I cannot attach any blame to those books which do not have
: female Keith Gersen's, although I would love to read books which
: did (if only Vance would have written them).

I disagree with none of this, but it wasn't the point I was making. The comment I made does not detract one iota from my enjoyment of Vance's books. Women appear to be alien to Vance - just like the opposite sex is alien to most of us I guess - and this reflects in his books. It's not that his women should be Kirth Gersen's or anything it is that they are so incredibly alien! I very much recognise the sentiment - like any ex-adolescent - and until it was pointed out to me it never occurred to me it could bother anyone.

As I said, my wife does - now - appreciate Vance very much and has seen through his own - apparent - inability to deal with women characters

: On the other hand I also love Sheri Teppers books, which were
: along with Suzy McKee Charnas (Motherlines etc.) truly eye opening education on being female. Has your wife read these
: authors?
