I disagree. Jerdian is as much a victim of her upbringing and environment as Gersen is of his. She can't bring herself to break out of the mould as little as Gersen can break out of his. I thought the ending was brilliant. Gersens gesture of buying the property and giving it to Jerdian is as significant, and shows his understanding of Methlen culture as much as his gesture of phoning Jerdians father after revealing the 'face'. Altogether its one of my favourite Vance novels and typifies his ability to sustain the readers interest(and his sense of humour!)right to the last page.
