I haven't read any Varley. Vinge's SNOW QUEEN is excellent, and something of a classic. I highly recommend it.
For me, after I started reading Vance's mystery books, I started looking at the neighboring authors. Now I enjoy Robert Van Gulik, Janwillem van der Wetering and Van Dine ("Philo Vance") mysteries.
