" I'm just finishing up my first re-reading of the Demon Princes novels since finishing "The Book of Dreams" 15 or so years ago,
: and getting so close to the finish of this wonderful series (I'm at Howard Hardoah's School reunion) has me a little melancholy. I wish there were more. Wouldn't a prequel to the series be great...."
I've got to disagree with your prequel idea. SF and fantasy is rife at the present time with series works. Also sequel series to series. Prequel series to series works.... aghhhhh!!... enough already.
I must admit to a similar feeling when I first came to the end of the Demon Princes series, but it really echoes Gersen's feelings of abandonment by his enemies. What are you going to do now you have followed Gersen across the galaxy, through one strange and marvellous human culture after another, enemies outwitted and defeated?
The very abruptness of the series' ending adds to sense of loss and abandonment felt by Gersen. Though when you think of it, with the remains of his 10 billion SVU scam on Kokor Hekkus, he can probably afford a year or two in therapy!
I'll take whatever Jack Vance writes, SF or fantasy - I'm still waiting to get my hands on a copy of " Nightlamp " - the joys of living in the antipodes.
As to Moorcock rivalling Vance - I don't think they are comparable. Moorcock's fantasy is dark, brooding and bloodthirsty stuff while I've always thought of Vance's as light and breezy, if occasionally with an edge to it - but hey it would be a boring old world if there was only one style of writing.-- Ed.
