do you include the gaen reach novels in that analysis? I would suggest that many cultures he portrays are evil and or ridiculous, and he intends the reader to think them so. I believe he considers the status-obsessed culture of Gallingdale to be absurd, although he implies that it is a parody of a natural human desire for status. (ref: The status-immune Fath's delight on their election to the Altroverts)
