Before anyone gets on my case, I meant "queasy", not "quesy"...
Hmmm.....
And: Howard Alan Treesong supposed to be glorious as against
the "one-dimensional" Gersen? PLEASE! Treesong is only
interesting in that he really goes for broke in trying for
ultimate power. The big So What? Ho hum?! A desire for power,
and even the possession of power, doesn't make ANYBODY
interesting per se..... Give me Gersen anytime (Alice Wroke
permitting).
I should add: Vance's protaganists, even if (almost) all under
30 and male, display balance and maturity as their norm,
sometimes to a surprising extent (the lack of guilt feelings in
Vance's characters is sometimes astounding, e.g. Night Lamp.
If you want a tragic, unfulfilled character, then Gersen is NOT
your choice.... Try Gastel Etzwane at the end of The Asutra for
real tragedy, though even there it's not necessarily final
or unhealable.
