As to the second story, I think it's "In the Lair of the White Worm" or something on that order, and I think it's by Gene Wolfe. Of course now I can't find it. Seems to me the book was all Wolfe stories, at least the one I had.
It's a great story, quite long as I recall, like a novelette. It reminded of both Vance, at least in being evocative, and George R.R. Martin...maybe it was a Martin story, and not Wolfe at all. I'll have to search the attic.
