: As Jack Vance gave up writing in the short story format a long time ago it's seems that this side to his work is rarely discussed. I think there are some really superb short stories perhaps not easy to find that any fans of his novels should definetely try to get hold of if possible.
: The very hard to find "Future Tense" collection contains four of his best ever - the wonderful "Dodkin's Job" has to be read to be believed!!!
I agree, "Dodkin's Job" is a great story--written in 1959 and still absolutely on target. I reread it every so often and everytime I do that last page makes me smile. I think it strikes a universal nerve in our modern society, a frustration we all feel at times. Doesn't it make you think of today's Dilbert cartoons?
I too would urge Vance fans to search out his earlier short stories if you have not already done so. They are so good. My all time favorite is "Moon Moth" followed by "Sail 25", "Last Castle" and "Dodkin's Job".
