. But every time I mention it to die-hard fantasy/SF fans, they SNEER!! Yes, that's right, they sneer! I have been looking for any one who finds this series as fascinating and moving as I do.

Elisabeth,
People who do sneer might just have another taste. I happen to 'sneer' about books from Brin, because he is rambling on about dolphins in one book and nothing substantially develops in the story, as i recall, so it's just not my taste.
Recently i reread Lyonesse for the xth time and found new enjoyment in the conversations. It is definitively (is that english) a 'realistic phantasy'. Vance does not get carried away with a flat story, full of heroic fighting but uses intelligent plots and discussions between the players to keep the story moving.
I recently had another, more opposite experience: somebody in Amsterdam advertised all his SF books for sale, so I called (I live in The Netherlands) and he had about 100 - 130 SF books.
Do you have any Vance in that?. 'That are the only once I keep' he told me.
In general Vance seems to be less favorite in the US if I see Newsgroup discussions then Dick, Heinlein and some of the newer writers. Something I clearly fail to understand.
Willem
