I've just read the quote in another posting that :

"Jack Vance is described as "possibly the best science fiction
writer today" by Oyvind Myhre in the text of a speech delivered
to the Second European Libertarian Convention in Norway in
1985. The Encyclopaedia of Science Fiction (ed. by Peter
Nicholls, Granada, London, 1981) describes Myhre as "a
prolific writer of considerable story-telling power."

This reminded me of a quote by Brian Aldiss's in his "Trillion
Year Spree" history-of-SF-athon, where he refers to Vance as a :

".... gaudily coloured coelaenth washed up on the shores of SF"

Not very nice, eh?! Still, in a later passage he does sing
the praises of the Durdane and the Planet of Adventure
sequences.

Regards,
Mick
