: :What was your first Vance book? What caused you to keep him in your list of authors to search out?

My first Jack Vance book was "The Dying Earth." Didn't go looking for his work right away, even though I was completely taken with his "last days" version of Earth, where science had progressed to being something "indistinguishable from magic." Instead, I just kept an eye out for more "Dying Earth" material, eventually getting ahold of "The Eyes of the Overworld" and, much later, "Rhialto the Marvelous." Last of all, there was "Cugel's Saga."

Vance remained on the periphery of my attention until I came upon "Lyonesse: Suldrun's Garden." Then, once and for all, I was hooked. I began to crave Vance. After "Madouc" came out, I found his "Planet of Adventure" in the Yale Co-op on a rare trip to New Haven. What a find! His best science fiction of all time, in my opinion. Still, his best or not, I wanted the rest and found most of it in time.

Vance is great!
