: As a lover of Vance, should I read [Zothique by Clark Aston Smith]?

The problem with Clark Ashton Smith, rather like H P Lovecraft, is that he thinks using a word denoting "horror" gives his writing a "horrifying" aspect.

The results are mildly risible period pieces today.

For a startling contrast from a near-contemporary of CAS, try "The Boats of the Glen Carrig" by William Hope Hodgson. Very, very scary.
