Mike ... it's pretty wild to talk now with someone who was in line at the Change Of Hobbit book store that day, when Vance did the book signing. That was the store, and that was the day, and I was the not-so-skinny guy at the front of the line. If I remember the process correctly, the fans with hardbacks in dust jackets (like me...) got there early. The people holding rare first printing Ballantines and Ace editions were in the middle of the line. The people all the way to the back had discovered Vance, and picked up new copies from the rack in honor of his presence. I had been waiting to meet Jack Vance for years, and I had come prepared. In the trunk of my car, in the side lot, were quite a few books. The rule was five books at a time, and I went up three times. I did, however, buy a new copy of Lyonesse each time I got back in line (it made me feel less guilty). That's when I got Vance's signature in To Live Forever, Big Planet and Languages of Pao. I'll never forget it.
.... Leon.
