I couldn't agree more with those who have suggested either "The Moon Moth" or Emphyrio for SF starters. Some of my favorite Vance fiction picks would be single titles from a series, or an entire series, and that might prove overwhelming. So, for the sake of brevity (and of course, sheer brilliance!) the above two
would get my nod. Fantasy is a different matter. I wouldn't start him on fantasy at all until he'd had plenty of SF first. For further advice, please see my two volume set of guidebooks, Life And How To Live It, and Of Course I'm Right, Ya Maroon!
