Nick writes:

: I find the Yip characters to be some of the most powerfull evocations in the Cadwal chronicles. I love their attitude to the co-inhabitants of Cadwal - the 'woskers'.

: Does anyone else enjoy re-reading any Yip dialogue they can find? (Zamien Lemew Gabriskies is my choice).

: 'Zamien spoke with great earnestness. "Truly, sir, it is wrong to make reports when one is not sure. An injustice might be done, and I would not want the weight upon my soul unless at least for a large sum of money."

: BTW, Araminta Station, in my opinion, is the best of all Vance's books.

Coincidentally, I just finished re-reading the Cadwal Books, and I think Nick is right on - the Yips and Yip psychology is a terrific innovation. Another good bit of Yip dialogue occurs during the interrogation of Selious, when Bodwyn Wook accuses him of withholding facts, to which Selious replies:

"I will cite these facts if you tell me what they are."

Araminta Station is a delight, well plotted, full of good characters and colorful situations. Throy, unfortunately, sends the series out with a whimper - it seems rushed, perfunctory, and even ad-libbed, like the outline of a Vance novel with only some of the pieces filled in. Some terrific parts, but underdeveloped, I think.
