Your reply was posted after my last posting. Can you please perhaps accept that while John's posting was intemperate, it was motivated by a love of a community, which can both be said about your original posting to Willem.

Tim,

I have always tried to respond to others without revealing any of my own feelings. At the risk of boring to tears those on the list, please let me say:

1. My baccalaureate degree was in the History of Art. Even though my specialty was in ukiyo-e (and JV admits to the use of and fascination with aspects of ukiyo-zoshi, i.e, written representations of the "floating world" of Edo-based old Japan, I have spend years in Europe studying and admiring the art and architecture of the old world. As Jack would say, "How could it be otherwise?"

2. I have owned several businesses in Italy.

3. I went to school in France.

4. One of my good friends for 30 years is a well known publisher in Germany.

5. I had good business relations with the now-defunct N.V. Slavenberg's Bank in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

If not obvious to all, let me specifically state: I admire Europe and Europeans.

My thoughts in re: negative postings to my windy piffle were:

A. My humor was way to ham-handed for the list.

--OR--

B. Folks on the list were humor-deprived.

Now then, since any true Vance fan could hardly be described as not having a fine sense of humor, I ascertained that the fault must redound to my crude efforts. Thus, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. (although congrats to Nick Edwards, who effortlessly sussed out my meaning).

Lest anyone think that I'm getting soft in my old age, let me address the concerns of two fellows on the list:

1. Patrick D describes himself as a "garlic-smelling, gauloise-smoking, beret-covered, dirty frog...and I fly very often too!" I say, you seem awfully familiar: were you the fellow sitting next to me in January during my Munich-Rome flight who emitted what I would have supposed was a physically impossible continuous stream of "gros pets?"

2. Willem has contributed a number of thoughtful posts to the board: however, he is prone to confusing the messenger with the message, and making god-like statements like: "btw I am neither left, nor right, I know the truth."

Yes, I can see it know, the Buddah, Confucious, Moses, Jesus, Mohammed and...Willem???

Again, my apologies for ruffling anyone's feathers--we are all good fans of Jack Vance.

Sincerely,

-David

: I'm sorry if this posting sounds preachy; I just would like agreement that all readers of this board are included in our own Vancian community, and are treated as such, unless they themselves put their pet peeves above talking with each other in a reasonable way, in which case they should be given over to Ned Ticket, Whirr and Panak, and laughed out of here.

: All of our own national histories will be forgotten by the time the Connatic rules.
: Tim
