I don't know about painting, but he has more than dabbled in pottery, and was quite interested in glazes. So the details in "The Potters of Firsk" are drawn from experience. Well, maybe not *all* of them . . .
The house that they built show that he and Norma both have a good eye for design and color.
As for his familiarity with academics, he's lived in the Bay Area all his life and graduated from Berkeley. It's interesting to trace his attitudes toward the academy from "Parapsyche" in 1958 (remember who gets called in to help the hero?) to the post-Free Speech Movement/anti-Viet Nam days.
Which reminds me--anyone trying to understand Jack's politics might look at Heinlein's career. He and Jack trace very similar trajectories.
