Believe that they are mentioned in all 3 of the connected stories of Rhialto and they seem to serve as an abstraction for objects of greed.
Rhialto and his fellows all wind up going on the highly risky venture in _Morreion_ and the source of the stones rather than leave it to one or two because they absolutely cannot stand the idea of others gaining one up on them. Cannot remember what if any actual magical properties they possess.
