: : I wasn't much older than you when I discovered Jack Vance.
: : You may want to keep a dictionary handy at first (and many
: : older people would too) because he often uses some pretty
: : obscure terms. It adds to the flavor and enjoyment of his work.
: : I discovered him through Michael Shea's pastiche, "A quest for
: : Simbilis" which is thoroughly enjoyable on its own.

: : I hesitate to recommend a good place to start - every JV reader
: : has his own thoughts on this... I'll stick my neck out and say
: : the "Lyonesse" trilogy would be a good choice s are strapped to our sides. If you do read a Vance or two, stop back and tell us what you thought.
Yes I hope Gwyndine follows up with JV. "The Blue World" is exactly the one I would recommend--as for the Gerson books--"The Face" and "The Book of Dreams" would be great in and of themselves but I think "Star King" would be a little burdensome
for a new reader--on the other Hand, Gwyndy, the 4 "Tschai" novels
are out as "Planet of Adventure" and also there's a trilogy called "Alastor"--3 novels in one---read the one entitled "Wyst: Alastor 1716" my sister was your age when she read it and she fell in love with Jantiff, the young hero...Anyway, do stop back
Dom
