: Personally, I dream of making a four-part animated miniseries of Planet of Adventure. This is an ingenious, compelling story with a remarkable tone and visual quality. The villains are entertaining, the aliens are colorful, the landscapes are beautfully harsh, and the hero's goal is simple and compelling. Animation could really free up the visual qualities of the story. I see a sort of washed-out quality to the colors, not as bright as new-age Disney.
: Would y'all prefer live action
I don't mind an animated miniseries, but I would like it to be more serious. I don't generally like Disney productions (Beauty and the Beast is an exception) because their target audience is aimed at children. Their formula is always the same; there is always a hero and a wisecracking sidekick who makes bad jokes.
An animated version of the The Hobbit has already been attempted in the 1970's and it was poorly done. Toy Story employed computer-generated graphics, and I must admit I liked the results. No one does computer-generated graphics better than the Japanese. One example is the absolutely stunning dance sequence between Squall and Rinoa in Final Fantasy VIII (an RPG), recently released in Japan. They looked like real people dancing.
Of course, it is probably cheaper to make it animated than live. The many colourful settings and the various inhabitants (like the Dirdir and the Pnume) in the Planet of Adventure would be hard to duplicate on camera. Still, I prefer live action because animation cannot truly capture the atmosphere and the realism involved.
