I just read last weekend Shiva Naipaul's "Beyond the Dragon's Mouth" and wish to recommend it to lovers of Jack Vance's fiction.
Shiva Naipaul was born on Trinidad, but is of Indian descent. (India-Indian, that is. He and his brother V S Naipaul are well-known writers.
"Beyond the Dragon's Mouth" includes both stories and journalistic travelogs. Some of the latter, in their descriptions of real-life cultural hodge-podges, reminded me very much of some of Vance's fictional settings. Vance enthusiasts may, like me, say "my word, people really do have societies like that!"
No, it's not science fiction, not in the least.
