This is an interesting point and defintiely worth considering. Metaphors are very potent
means of commuication. Could it be that some of JV's appeal is
that it calls to our `underminds'.
Anyway I feel very defensive towards the ole JV because I have gained
so much pleasure from reading his works. Though that is no
reason to avoid looking closer now.
I would rather look at the large picture he creates for examining
the whole raft of different ideas and emotions that arise from
the situations he creates. One of the delights of the Vancian
hero/heroine is their ability for self-reflection and reasonable
self-doubt. But rarely to the point of inaction. They definitely
question their own perseptions, the system they are a part of and
hence tend to be ahead of the game.
In the `Amome' the whole place is divided up into different camps,
or `cantos' from which arise a range of problems. The `rugoshki'
are another version of the problem. How is difference tolerated
and accepted and whatare the limits.
Nevertheless a good question
Cheers
