: Does anyone know of other writers like Jack? You know, like style and color in the stories? I've tried reading many others, but find myself less satisfied. I usually resort to re-reading.

If you like the Vugel the Clever stories, I suggest reading Ernest Bramah's "Kai Lung" series. The writing style, and especially the dialogue are similar. I wrote to Vance asking if he had read them, and he replied that they were among his favorites in the 1940's (they were written 1900-1942.)

I suggest starting with THE WALLET OF KAI LUNG. You can find used paperbacks (including Lin Carter's "Adult Fantasy" series) for reasonable prices, or try the library. It's a series of stories with a surrounding plot, so you should be able to tell quickly whether it's your cup of tea. If it is, there are modern authors (e.g. Barry Hughart) who share similarities with both Vance and Bramah.

On the science fiction side, I can't think of any off the top of my head who are similar in style. He's one of a kind.
