Obscure and inconsequential trivia that nobody else may care about or be interested in, but I just can't keep it to myself.
Just started reading "Night Lamp", and got a belly laugh from the very first paragraphs -- in particular, the name of the sun, "Robert Palmer's Star".
A couple of years ago, "Q", the British music magazine, published a very brief interview with the musician Robert (Addicted To Love) Palmer. Asked what his fondest ambition was, Palmer replied that he would love to produce a motion picture version of "Eyes of the Overworld." Apparently Mr. Vance gave Mr. Palmer a nod of recognition and by naming a star after him!
If anybody else knows of any similar "in-jokes" in Vance's work, I'd enjoy hearing them.
