: : I would like to know if anyone else has had this experience. I love the Lyonesse trilogy, it's my favorite high fantasy series. But every time I mention it to die-hard fantasy/SF fans, they SNEER!! Yes, that's right, they sneer!
: Elizabeth,
: I wouldn't say "sneer", but yes, a negative reaction to Lyonesse. Could not at the time understand, for the life of me, why anyone would turn up their noses at a marvellous, rich fantasy. It is certainly true that some people are not ast fond of fantasy as SF and Vance's pen scrolls out both with beauty and apparent ease, although fantasy is by far the older genre.
: Many come to fantasy now through roll playing games, but when I was growing up only standard fairy tales as venue and as a result I read almost exclusively SF. In fact I wasn't interested in anything set in the very distant future.
: Especial criticism was leveled at award winning Madouc (MAH-duk, Peter). Unjustly criticized say I. I would part with neither Vance's SF nor his fantasy.
