: : I would like to know if anyone else has had this experience. I love the Lyonesse trilogy, it's my favorite high fantasy series. But every time I mention it to die-hard fantasy/SF fans, they SNEER!! Yes, that's right, they sneer!
: Elizabeth,
: I wouldn't say "sneer", but yes, a negative reaction to Lyonesse. Could not at the time understand, for the life of me, why anyone would turn up their noses at a marvellous, rich fantasy. It is certainly true that some people are not ast fond of fantasy as SF and Vance's pen scrolls out both with beauty and apparent ease, although fantasy is by far the older genre.
: Many come to fantasy now through roll playing games, but when I was growing up only standard fairy tales as venue and as a result I read almost exclusively SF. In fact I wasn't interested in anything set in the very distant future.
: Especial criticism was leveled at award winning Madouc (MAH-duk, Peter). Unjustly criticized say I. I would part with neither Vance's SF nor his fantasy.

Well, i'm a French reader of Jack Vance ; he knows France pariculary good ... Poors Americans, Madouc is a French name, as many others: Lyon french city 'esse' only in french 'ou' idem ... Vance describe the french middle age where the 'English' spoke French (of course the all english 'noblesse' was French and... read midle age history of England...) but i wouldn't like prententious (other french origin!) but i am... The word 'sir' as you believe is 'really' english, is french (again) it comes from 'sire'. Well... England without the great 'conquest' (still!!!) of Guillaume le Conquerant duc de Normandie would be still the land of celtic Barabarians... Vance knows all of these things. he came to Amboise near my birth city, Tours, in Touraine, drink some good wine as Touraine-Amboise, and read the story of the 'Sires d'Amboise'... There is a castle in Amboise, i invite you to come in Touraine see the 'castles ' !!! 'castel 'in french!!! bye
