: : : How does one pronounce "Ecce"? I've been reading it as "Eck-uh".
: : My dictionary says that the proper Latin pronunciation is "etch-ay".
: I'd have thought so too, but I wonder if that only Italianises the pronunciation. When I was doing Latin at school (1984-88), our teacher always pronounced it eck-ay.
It's been awhile since this was posted, but I didn't see a follow-up listed on this WWW page, so I thought I'd go ahead and add that "Ecce" as pronounced "eck-ay" is the generally accepted Classical pronunciation. "Etch-ay" would be an Ecclesiastical/Mediaeval/Vulgar Latin way to pronounce the same word. Either may be correct, although you should either match the pronunciation to the context (a Vulgate Bible passage in Ecclesiastical Latin, Cicero in Classical) or be consistent in using one pronunciation or the other all the time. As I have to deal with Classical, Mediaeval, and Neo-Latin (Humanistic), I personally prefer the former. Hope that helps.
