More spoiler comments, for anyone who actually hasn't read the Planet of Adventure series:
Interesting also the 1:1 combat between Reith & the Dirdir as he is desperately attempting to use Dirdir tradition to save his life (I think after the betrayal by Woudiver). I don't have the book in front of me, but my recollection paraphrased: "The Dirdir attacked, swift and massive as a tiger." In anti-climactic fashion, however, Reith defeated the Dirdir swiftly & easily. Was it because of Reith's superior combat skills? Or because the Dirdir rely on the opponents' fear & acceptance that they will be defeated, to win the battles for them (and was over-confident)? Vance doesn't really describe why Reith so easily defeats an opponent which is able to attack with the speed & mass of a tiger...
: Great part of the story : especially the reasoning between Traz and Adam on the justification to hunt the Dirdir when they hunt Humans. Interesting how Adam set it up, most thrilling part:

: Spoiler
: was the run back: you can indeed imagine the thick veins caused by pumping blood.
: Amazing that the dirdir respect the 'rules' and let them go , while they later pick up everybody for that city who was connected somehow

: : To me, the most terrible of all enemies were the Dirdir. Vance explodes with vigour and extreme suspense in this book. "Dirdir! They hunt!" cried Traz. They hunt men, thats what they do, for sport and for food. I suppose its a primal fear of man-eaters that Vance pulls out of the reader.
: : I still shudder thinking about when Reith, Anacho and Traz Onmale fled from the Dirdir hunting party...their desperation, haste and fear was palpable.
