: Just read Bruce Sterling's "The Artificial Kid". In this edition (Hardwired, 1997), William Gibson in his foreword describes the work as "sort of like a Jack Vance novel". I wouldn't have made this judgement but I note at a glance two parallels to "Maske: Thaery" -- (1) a man who turns into a tree and plants himself; (2) the word 'hyperas' (< 'hyperaesthesia'), with a different meaning from Vance's.

Sterling's Mechanist and Shaper etc. creations are closer to
Vance than the Artificial Kid. The evolution of human societies
that have reached other stars.
