I agree with your judgement. The Artificial Kid is, in my opinion, nothing like any of Vance's books, either in terms of characters, environment, atmosphere, or anything else I can think of. In fact, this book, which "I sort of liked", but not as much as some other of Sterling's writings, is less like Vance than a lot of other books, which I would never dream of characterizing as a Vance like book.
