Adam Reith and Zap do indeed become lovers. After their initial escape from the Pnume, they have several adventures, but immediately after Reith fools the eel racer, they take ship to avoid pursuit by the Ghizindra. While on board they witness an aerial battle between two air rafts, to a backround of increasing storm and lightening. They become lovers during this evening.
