The Sir Julian Hove episode was just a short aside in the first Demon Prince novel...but it illustrates one of the reasons why Vance is among my favorite SF writers.
Vance sometimes takes a break in the main story line to give the reader some historical perspective on something in the story. Not only does this give the story some additional depth...it is sometimes pretty funny as well.
